Embark on a journey into the wild and captivating side of Crete with Explor.gr‘s excursion to Agiofarago and Matala. Located in the south of the prefecture of Heraklion, these destinations offer a stark contrast, making the tour truly special. On one side lies the serene, spiritual Agiofarago with its untamed beauty, while on the other side awaits the lively Matala with its hippie charm.
After meeting your guide and a brief orientation, the journey begins southward through the plain of Messara towards Agiofarago, known as the gorge of the Saints. The first stop is the quaint village of Siva, where you can relax with a drink or gather essentials for the day. A short distance away lies the Odigitria Monastery, a significant 14th-century monastery where a brief stop will be made. From there, the route transitions to a dirt road leading to the parking lot of Agiofarago, marking the start of the hiking trail. Trekking through the gorge, adorned with striking oleanders and olive trees, you’ll reach the stunning beach and the Libyan Sea in approximately 30 minutes, offering a perfect opportunity for a refreshing swim.
Afterward, the journey continues to Matala, a small yet bustling village boasting a magnificent 300-meter-long sandy beach and clear deep waters. Renowned for its carved Roman tombs and its association with the hippie culture of the ’70s, Matala invites you to soak in the sun and sea. Enjoy a swim at the beach before indulging in a traditional local tavern for a delightful lunch.
